Fire From the Lord

11 Now the people complained^(A) about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord,^(B) and when he heard them his anger was aroused.^(C) Then fire from the Lord burned among them^(D) and consumed^(E) some of the outskirts of the camp.

³³ But while the meat was still between their teeth^(A) and before it could be consumed, the anger^(B) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.^(C)

³⁴ Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah,^[a](A) because there they buried the people who had craved other food.

²² not one of those who saw my glory and the signs^(A) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times^(B)—

²³ not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath^(A) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt^(B) will ever see it.^(C)

³² But as for you, your bodies will fall^(A) in this wilderness.

³⁵ I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things^(A) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.^(B)”

³⁶ So the men Moses had sent^(C) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble^(D) against him by spreading a bad report^(E) about it— ³⁷ these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report^(F) about the land were struck down and died of a plague^(G) before the Lord.

⁶ Then the Lord sent venomous snakes^(A) among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.^(B)

⁴ The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders^(A) of these people, kill them and expose^(B) them in broad daylight before the Lord,^(C) so that the Lord’s fierce anger^(D) may turn away from Israel.”
